Preschool/PreK Curriculum

Our Philosophy

Vineyard Children’s Center provides a warm, nurturing environment that fosters learning and supports social-emotional development.  Teachers support student learning through exploration, hands on learning and independent discovery. VCC provides experiences that foster a positive sense of self and supports the developmental needs of children from infants through PreK.   Interactions between students and with adults promote cooperation, respect for self and others and a sense of community.  The classroom community respects and values the differences of each child.  VCC embraces its diverse center community, welcoming families of all cultures, genders, races, ethnic origins, religions or beliefs and nationalities.

Curriculum

Vineyard Children’s Center uses the HighScope curriculum.  This model is based upon research that supports student learning through exploration.  HighScope encompasses the Early Childhood Standards of Quality and Key Developmental Indicators (KDI’s) for Infant/Toddlers and Preschool/PreK. 

They include eight content areas:

  • Approaches to Learning

    Children learn and retain information when they are engaged in a hands on approach through play and active engagement in their environment.  Children learn about themselves and their capabilities as they develop their cognitive, social and emotional capacities.  The teaching staff facilitate learning by creating different ways children can interact and explore their environment.  These learning experiences foster problem solving, curiosity, creativity, initiative and independence.

  • Social Skills and Emotional Development

    Through a safe, supportive environment, children are able to develop a positive self identity by trying new things, experiencing successes and learning how to navigate through failures.  Children learn how to regulate their feelings.  The classroom community is where the children learn how to build relationships, engage in cooperative play and resolve social conflicts.

  • Physical Development and Health

    Children explore movement within the environment, developing both gross motor and fine motor skills.  They develop strength, flexibility, balance, hand-eye coordination and dexterity.  As they grow, they learn how to carry out personal care routines independently and engage in healthy behaviors.

  • Language, Literacy and Communication

    Language and Literacy development is best supported when children are exposed to a print rich environment.  This includes print throughout the classroom, and early and continuous exposure of books.  Research shows that a wide range of vocabulary is an indicator of school success entering kindergarten.

  • Mathematics

    Play and manipulation of materials support the foundations for Math.  Through experiences with real objects, children learn the concepts of counting, sorting, grouping and sequencing as well as the concepts of size, shape and quantity.

  • Creative Arts

    The creative art experience emphasizes process over product.  Teachers encourage children to explore art materials as they part of their creative process.

  • Science and Technology

    Children are naturally curious about their world.  Teachers foster this curiosity through inquiry, exploration, scientific reasoning, questioning and experimenting.  

  • Social Studies

    Communities are created within the early childhood classes.  Through these communities, children learn to respect the values and differences of others, celebrate diversity within the classroom, participate in classroom decisions and recognize the different roles within a group setting.
